"A Thousand Mile Journey Begins With A Single Step" -Lao Tzu

“Exploring Purpose” guides participants through contemplative practices, reflective discussions, and philosophical inquiry. Drawing inspiration from Taoism, Zen Buddhism, Yoga, Ikigai and the writings of Matsuo Basho this series offers a holistic approach to purpose, community and belonging.

9 Weeks of exploration:

  • Purpose Partners: Each student will work with a partner as we navigate our contemplative practices and hunches of purpose.

  • Students will explore the Eight Elements of Ikigai (reason for being) and Ken Mogi's Five Pillars of Ikigai.

  • Matsuo Basho revolutionized and elevated the Haiku from its humble origins to its current place of reverence. We will be reading Basho's The Narrow Road To The Interior and other writings and using haiku as a method of inquiry and reflection.

  • Our explorations will be directed through contemplating other classic texts like the Tao Te Ching, Hua Hu Ching, Gate-less Gate, and Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.

  • Students will develop their own personal Ikigai road map to continue their explorations after the course.

Narrow Road to the Interior and Other Writings - Matsuo Basho

Translated by Sam Hamill (Shambhala)

"Map difficult through easy
Approach great through Narrow.
The most difficult things in the world
Must be accomplished through the easiest.
The greatest things in the world
Must be accomplished through the smallest."
